Statement:
¨This work explores my interest in Buckminster Fuller’s inventions and observations in physics and science. The two Fuller inventions I am most drawn to are the Dymaxion World Map and the Geodesic Dome. The concept of the Dymaxion Map reminds me of the kind of space often created in my paintings. The surfaces of my paintings are flat, yet they often evoke a sense of depth through layered visual effects. The Dymaxion Map, or Fuller Map, projects the globe onto an icosahedron surface that can be unfolded and flattened into two dimensions. I became interested in Buckminster Fuller’s Geodesic Dome because of how it is built. Its lattice structure resembles the grid I draw to create order at the start of each painting. Another fascinating aspect of the Geodesic Dome’s lattice is the triangular rigidity, which distributes stress evenly and maximizes space. My own “lattice” grid drawing helps establish composition over the rigid square format. Through the process of painting and its applications, this lattice grid adds a sense of space and depth¨.
